Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett Sparks Controversy with Comments About Gov. Greg Abbott

Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett recently made headlines for her controversial remarks about Governor Abbott during a weekend appearance at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles. While addressing the audience, Crockett referred to Abbott — who uses a wheelchair — as "Gov. Hot Wheels," sparking widespread criticism.

"You all know we got Gov. Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now," said Crockett, a Democrat from Dallas. She continued, "And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-ass mess, honey."

Backlash and Public Reaction

Abbott, who was paralyzed in 1984 after a tree fell on him while he was running, has been serving as Texas governor since his election in 2014. Following Crockett's remarks, Republicans swiftly condemned her comments. Texas Senator John Cornyn called the remarks "disgraceful" and "shameful" in a post on the social media platform X.

Crockett made the remarks while speaking at the Human Rights Campaign event after thanking Morgan Cox, a Dallas resident and board member of the organization. A video of the event was posted on the Human Rights Campaign's YouTube channel, drawing significant attention.

Crockett's Clarification

On Tuesday, Crockett responded to the backlash by clarifying that her comments were not directed at Abbott's disability. Instead, she claimed she was referencing Abbott's controversial policy of relocating immigrants who entered Texas illegally to sanctuary cities like New York and Philadelphia. These cities have local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

"I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable," Crockett posted on X.

Ongoing Criticism

Despite her clarification, Crockett continues to face criticism from Republicans. This controversy follows another incident where Crockett suggested last week that Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and former head of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, should "be taken down."

Governor Abbott's office has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the recent controversy.
